Thai Opposition MP Taopiphop Limjittrakorn from the Move Forward Party has called for the legalization and regulation of adult films and sex toys in Thailand rather than an outright ban.

Posting on his social media, Mr. Taopiphop advocated for a discussion in parliament regarding Section 287 of the criminal code, which currently enforces a total prohibition on adult media and toys.

He emphasized that his proposal aims to “unlock Thailand’s adult industry while maintaining regulations, without promoting unrestricted freedom.”

The proposed amendments by Mr. Taopiphop include:

Allowing specific types of adult media with strict restrictions, such as prohibiting access to individuals under 20 years old and banning content that includes violent scenes like rape.

Legalizing sex toys to ensure they meet safety standards, with oversight by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to protect users and prevent illegal trading.

Acknowledging the potential for controversy, Mr. Taopiphop expressed his openness to criticism, stressing the importance of open debate to understand dissenting opinions.

He clarified that his initiative is not for personal gain but to fulfill his duty as a representative of the Thai people to push societal boundaries through democratic mechanisms and parliamentary discussions.

Currently, Thailand’s ban on adult content results in the blocking of thousands of websites and regular raids on content creators on platforms like OnlyFans. However, enforcement typically occurs only when material goes viral.
