Thai Government Holds Seminar on E-Cigarette Dangers, Urges Vigilance at Educational Institutions in Bangkok

Thai government, led by Dr. Puangpetch Chunlaid, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, recently convened a crucial seminar addressing the pressing issue of e-cigarette dangers. The seminar, held on March 28th, 2024, garnered the attendance of administrators from 437 educational institutions across Bangkok. Dr. Puangpetch underscored the grave concerns surrounding the accessibility of e-cigarettes to youths and minors within Thai society. He emphasized the imperative need for concerted efforts across all sectors to combat this growing menace.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin issued a directive to relevant agencies to tackle the rampant proliferation of e-cigarettes. Numerous complaints lodged with the Thai Office of the Consumer Protection Board by concerned guardians shed light on the alarming prevalence of illegal e-cigarette sales, particularly within educational institutes and community areas. Responding promptly, Thai authorities initiated a targeted initiative dubbed the “Vape Operation” on March 6th, aimed at uprooting major sources of illicit e-cigarette sales amounting to over three million baht in Bangkok.

The seminar served as a pivotal platform for stakeholders to converge and strategize comprehensive measures to address the escalating e-cigarette crisis. By fostering collaboration and aligning efforts across various sectors, the Thai government endeavors to curb the proliferation of e-cigarettes and safeguard the well-being of its youth population. Through concerted action and heightened vigilance, Thailand aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of e-cigarette usage and promote a healthier society for generations to come.In a concerted effort to combat the proliferation of e-cigarette dangers, the Thai government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the Royal Thai Police, has initiated decisive action. This strategic partnership has resulted in the closure of over 1,700 illicit

e-cigarette websites and social media platforms, marking a significant milestone in the fight against this growing threat.

Dr. Puangpetch, speaking on behalf of the coalition, emphasized the critical role of guardians and school administrators in safeguarding youth from the harmful effects of e-cigarettes. Stressing the detrimental impact on both physical health and cognitive development, he urged heightened vigilance and proactive monitoring of children and students. Moreover, recognizing the pivotal role of education in prevention, schools were encouraged to incorporate comprehensive programs addressing e-cigarette dangers into their curriculum.

To facilitate the reporting of illegal e-cigarette sales, Dr. Puangpetch highlighted multiple avenues available to the public. Individuals can report violations by dialing 1166, utilizing the Traffy Fondue application, or reaching out to government hotlines. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to fostering a safer environment and protecting the well-being of its citizens.
