Pattaya Councilman Calls for Controls on Tourist Numbers and Construction on Koh Larn
A member of the Pattaya City Council has called for stricter controls on tourist numbers and construction projects on Koh Larn to mitigate its environmental impact. Mr. Phasakorn Yusoomboon, representing Pattaya District 1, expressed these concerns during the council meeting held on May 29th.
In a stark revelation, Mr. Phasakorn shared that Koh Larn is witnessing an alarming average of over 10,000 visitors daily, a number that skyrockets to over 20,000 during peak seasons. This rapid influx has triggered a construction spree, with resorts, hotels, and pool villas mushrooming on the island. This uncontrolled growth is causing anxiety among residents, who fear irreversible damage to the environment and public utilities without immediate intervention.
In a plea for action, Mr. Phasakorn highlighted the grim reality of the situation. He pointed out the existing challenges, such as water shortages, inadequate electricity supply, increasing waste generation, and a struggling sewage treatment system. If addressed, these issues could lead to a severe environmental crisis in Koh Larn. He urged Pattaya City to develop a comprehensive management plan, including measures to regulate tourist numbers and control the construction of new buildings on the island.
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Mr. Manoch Nongyai acknowledged these issues and noted the varying tourist demographics. Chinese and Indian tourists mainly visit for day trips, while European and Thai tourists tend to stay longer. He also disclosed over 4,000 available rooms across different accommodations at Koh Larn.
Mr. Manoch reassured that the city is actively monitoring construction activities and taking steps to address unauthorized buildings on the island.
